[Slightly] Too Much Fun

It’s good to take a break every now and then.

You can only keep up the same routine for so long.

We just hit what we’re calling our halfway point. We’ll be heading back to the states for summer camp in another two months or so, and we’ve been here for roughly two months.

There gets to be a time when you feel like you’re doing the exact same thing each and every day. And it can be exhausting.

Now funnily enough we had already had a short trip planned to go visit some really close friends of ours a little down south from where we are.

So last week we got on a plane and flew out to see them. It was so surreal to see them in China after all this time of us hearing about their adventures when we’d see them in the States.

Firstly where they’re staying is SO different from where we are. It’s hard to believe they’re both in the same country. Humidity and endless heat is the only way to describe it. And here we are in the snow majority of the time in below freezing weather, haha!

Getting to talk to them was amazing. We met their friends, both American and Chinese and it was just validating to be able to talk to them about daily occurrences, or what it’s like teaching kids, and to have them laughing and nodding along with you knowing exactly where you’re coming from.

Don’t get me wrong, we have friends and family that we talk to all the time about anything and everything. But there’s something about talking to somebody who gets it, and is doing it, that just makes you feel so much less insane.

We were able to meet a few people we had heard about and briefly met in the States a while ago that had ended up in China too which was pretty cool. Hearing their stories, encouraging them, being encouraged, and laughing with them was the best pick me up we could have asked for.

Then there were times that we just goofed off.

We played card games with far too many people – We drove around in motorized boats with water guns that were probably meant for seven year olds and got soaked – We walked by the beach a few times and talked about nothing and everything – We wandered down a street of toy shops as one of the boys blew bubbles – We talked about how hard it is living here – We laughed about how awesome it is living here – We finished watching Batman vs. Superman three hours before we were supposed to be up and leaving for the airport (we had to leave at 4:30am) – We fit five people in three seats in the back of a taxi – We found out the guy laying across us in the taxi was ticklish and that was a whole other story –

We squished a lot of people in for a game of Nertz

But most importantly we just hung out, got to know each other, and laughed. When it came time to leave it felt like we had just gotten there. We were so thankful that it worked out for us to visit them, even if it was just for a short time. It ended up being the perfect little break we needed.

It’s always a relief to know you’re not the only crazy Americans who moved halfway across the world to teach English to Chinese kids. 😀 Thank you guys so much for having us, miss you already!
